Government allots Vinashin’s land to another

The government has handed over a 152-hectare plot of land in a southern province originally allotted to embattled shipbuilder Vinashin to another state-owned firm.

The site at the Song Hau Industrial Park in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang is now in the possession of the Vietnam National Shipping Lines, or Vinalines, which plans to develop a port and a logistics facility there.

The government had sought to allot 216 ha to Vinalines but it only accepted 152 ha.

Vinalines also wants to build a ship repair facility but Hau Giang’s deputy mayor, Tran Thanh Lap, is against the idea due to possible pollution of the nearby Hau River.

The land transfer is part of a government-approved restructure plan to save the sinking Vinashin that has come under fire at the ongoing legislative session for running up debts of over $4 billion.
