Competitive power market to run next year
The Government plans to restructure and create a competitive power market next year in an effort to address the power shortage, said Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai at the NA’s first interpellation on Nov. 22.
As head of the State steering committee for the 6th master plan on developing power plants, the Deputy PM frankly conceded his responsibility for the current power shortage.
Since 2003, many build-operate-transfer projects have been carried out in Viet Nam but the lack of capital has made them difficult to be deployed, he added.
The average electricity price, lower than in other regional countries, has also worsened the power supply.
However, Deputy PM Hai assured that if the 6th master plan is fully realized, the electricity deficit would be addressed.
Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai urged the early completion of the undergoing power projects, especially those in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong, and called on stronger foreign investment into the sector.
The Government also plans to fix the price of wind-based power at about 12.5 cent/kWh to push up the use of this kind of energy.
Particularly, a competitive power market will be introduced next year as part of the effort to restructure the sector.
Electricity supply may never meet the demand if its price is not decided in line with the market rules, the Deputy PM Hai said.
