Weekly Information on Banking Activities (Sep 17-23/2010)

1.Mobilizing rates:

- The mobilizing rates in VND slightly changed as compared to the previous week

- The mobilizing rates in USD: Several joint - stock commercial banks, namely the Housing Development Joint Stock Commercial Bank, and the Vietnam Thuong Tin Joint Stock Commercial Bank, increased the rates by 0.1-0.5 percentage points in comparison with the common level of the group of the state-owned commercial banks.

2. Lending rates

The lending rates in VND and USD were unchanged as compared to the previous week.

3. Transactions turnover:

The total amount of transactions in the inter-bank market reached about VND 93,578 billion and USD 2,661 million, i.e. VND 18,716  billion and USD 532 million per day averagely. The amount of transactions in VND and USD increased by 10,620 billion and 698 million per day averagely respectively. Most transactions in VND were short terms (Overnight, 1 and 2 weeks), of which the amount of overnight transactions in VND was 26,079 billion, accounting for 28% of the total amount of transactions in VND. The amount of overnight transactions in USD was 1,551 million, accounting for 58% of the total amount of USD transactions.

4. Interest rates:

For the rates in VND, the average VND interest rate decreased for most terms, of which the rates for overnight and 1 month terms declined by 0.57 - 0.85 percentage points. The rates for demand and 6 month terms slightly decreased. Especially, the rate for 12 month term went down by 1.29 percentage point to 10.32% p.a from 11.61% p.a. The rate for 3 month term slightly increased.

The average overnight interest rate was 6.58% p.a, down by 0.71 percentage point as compared to the previous week. The rates for short terms (Below 3 months) ranged between 6.58% - 8.39% p.a. The average rate for over 3 month terms, excluding the rate for 6 month term at 11.03% p.a, was about 10% p.a. The highest lending rate was 12% p.a. while the lowest rate was 5.5% p.a. (Excluding the demand rate).

For the rates in USD, the average interest rates in USD for 2 weeks and 1 month terms decreased by 0.46 - 0.29 percentage points p.a respectively. The rates for overnight and 3 month terms slightly increased. The rates for 6 and 12 month terms went up by 0.48 and 0.4 percentage points p.a respectively. The rate for 1 week term was unchanged at 0.48% p.a.

The average overnight interest rate was 0.29% p.a; the other rates ranged between 0.34% - 2.24%. There was no transaction in USD for demand loans.

5. Exchange rate

The forex market was stable. The liquidity was improved. As a result, commercial banks could buy foreign currencies from the market. The VND/USD exchange rates were commonly quoted at 19,480-19,500.
