Vietnam preliminary Oct CPI up 9.66% on year; up 1.05% on month

Vietnam's consumer price index rose 9.66% in October from a year earlier as a result of higher education costs, and pricier housing and building material prices, the government's General Statistics Office said Saturday.

The index rose 1.05% from a month earlier, and increased 8.75% for the year to date, the statistics office said. The figures are based on data for the first 23 days of the month.

In September, the index rose 8.92% from a year earlier and increased 1.31% from August.

Education costs in October rose 19.19% on year, while the prices of housing and building materials increased 13.36%, the statistics office said.

The statistics office said the dollar has risen 7.21% against the dong since the end of last year and 0.60% from last month. The central bank set the dollar's value at VND18,932 Saturday.
