Malaysian company studies hydroelectricity power plant in Laos

The Lao Government has given a licence to Mudajaya Corporation Berhad from Malaysia to undertake a feasibility study of a 60-MW hydroelectricity power plant on Nam Poui river in Phieng district, Sayaboury province.

The Mudajaya Corporation Berhad, a subsidiary of Mudajaya Group Berhad, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of the Lao PDR to undertake an exclusive study on Nam Poui 1 hydro electric power project in Laos, at Don Chanh Palace Hotel on 6 October.

The Nam Poui 1 hydroelectricity power project is designed to produce and supply electrical power for export to neighbouring countries, as well as for domestic consumption in Laos. The project is located downstream of the Nam Poui river in Phieng district of the northwestern province of Sayaboury.

The study will encompass a feasibility study, an environmental impact assessment, a social impact assessment and a health impact assessment.

The project?s feasibility study report is scheduled to be submitted to the Government of Laos 19 months from the date of execution of the MOU.

This MOU is valid for a period of 21 months from the date of execution and will either proceed to the signing of the project development agreement if found to be viable or otherwise shall expire unless the MOU is extended by mutual consent between the Mudajaya Corporation Berhad and the Government of Laos.

Mr Anto Joseph, the Executive Director of Mudajaya Corporation, said that the Nam Poui 1 hydropower project which is to be jointly developed by Mudajaya together with the Government of Laos, marks the entrance of Mudajaya into the field of hydroelectric power internationally.

The Malaysian company will immediately start with a feasibility study report and after that the company hopes to develop the Nam Poui 1 hydroelectricity power project which will proceed smoothly so that the company can all meet again to celebrate the fruits of discussion on the project development and the power purchase agreement from the Nam Poui 1 hydroelectricity power project.

Taking note to the MOU signing were Vice Minister of Planning and Investment Thongmy Phomvisay, Director General of the Energy Promotion and Development Department, Mr Saypaseuth Phomsoupha, the Executive Director of Mudajaya Corporation, Mr Yong Yee Coi, the Director of Mudajaya Corporation Mr Anto Joseph.

The event was witnessed by Sayaboury Governor Lien Thikeo, Malaysian Ambassador to Laos Zainal Abidin Ahmad, and officials concerned.
