ASEAN Trade Centres soft opening

The ASEAN Trade Centre in Vientiane Capital on Sunday held its soft opening ceremony while the grand opening is expected to take place during the Lao New Year celebration in mid-April next year.

Taking part in the ceremony were Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh and Minister of Commerce and Industry Nam Viyaketh, among others.

The centre is on the Kamphaengmeuang (City Wall) Road, Hongkae village, Saysettha district, invested by a local businessman, Mr Visay Na Viengchanh who hopes to promote business activities and provide entertainment facilities for Vientiane residents. The centre consists of more than 170 business suites and a shopping complex.

Mr Visay, President of the ASEAN Trade Centre, said that the main shopping centre was normally to be completed next March. But due to the abnormal weather conditions, its completion is prolonged and the grand opening ceremony is thus postponed to the Lao New Year celebration 2011.

"This centre will offer another option for Vientiane residents in shopping and leisure," he continued.

Vientiane Mayor Sombath Yialiheu said that the construction of the ASEAN Trade Centre was a significant contribution to the economic growth of Vientiane Capital and had applauded the great decision making of local businessmen to invest in the construction of the ASEAN Trade Centre. Starting in 2007, the construction is now more than 40 per cent complete. The centre is built on a total area of 25,000 square metres.

Upon completion, the main centre as a three-storey building will consist of 11 other buildings with more than 100 rooms built on 12,000 square metres.

The ASEAN commerce building has already been booked by operators of about 85-90 per cent, of which 70-80 percent are foreign operators.

Organisations that have already rented suites include private companies, non-government organisations, private schools and shops.
