Contractors seek German partners
German and Vietnamese businesses in the transport and construction sectors had the opportunity to discuss co-operation at two trade promotion events held in Ha Noi on Tuesday and in HCM City on October 28.
German Trade and Invest, the foreign trade and inward investment promotion agency, and the German Industry and Commerce in Viet Nam provided attendees with information about investment and cooperation and support channels for businesses.
Vietnamese businesses said Germany was a good place for them to do business since 83,000 Vietnamese nationals and 3,300 Vietnamese students live there while German businesses believed they could create links with Viet Nam through the 100,000 Vietnamese who used to study in East Germany.
Last year, Germany was Viet Nam's leading trade partner in Europe, with bilateral trade topping US$4.6 billion, up from a mere $600 million in 2008, Michael Pfeiffer, chief executive of German Trade and Invest, said.
Viet Nam's exports were worth $3.2 billion, mainly from footwear, textile, agricultural, and seafood products.
It paid $1.4 billion to import mostly machinery and industrial equipment.
Considering that the two economies have shown positive signs after recovering from crisis, the German Trade and Invest and the German Industry and Commerce in Viet Nam believed the two countries had plenty of opportunities for economic development.
German businesses expressed interest in investing in transportation and infrastructure in Viet Nam.
