Dalat plants potatoes without use of soil
Dalat G.A.P Co., Ltd has successfully used aeroponics, the process of growing plants in an air or mist without the use of soil, to grow potatoes. This method could help plants grow healthier and quicker than plants grown by other systems.
The company adopted the method from Professor Nguyen Quang Thanh, head of the Science Council, Institute of Biotechnology at Hanoi University of Agriculture.
The potatoes were grown by spraying the plant’s roots with a nutrient rich solution.
A machine with programmed time takes care of the plants automatically. The mechanism also sprays water and nutrients to plants automatically.
Results have shown that a seedling grown by aeroponics gives 20 tubers, while planting in soil only produces four to five potatoes.
The company plans to extend production to supply seeds to major potato areas in the north that currently still relies on seeds from China.
The company has been providing potato seedlings for potato producing manufactures in the north and the south. One hectare of land can provide 60,000 tubers.
There are 2,500ha of land for potato growing in the north and 1,500 in the south, which shows the potential benefits if companies take advantage of aeroponics.
