Party committee head urges stronger growth
Le Thanh Hai, Secretary of HCM City's Party committee, told a meeting of city Party members opening yesterday to keep building on the first half's strong 11-per-cent growth to reach this year's targets.
He praised agencies, businesses and citizens for the highest growth rate since 2006.
The city's rate of growth in the second quarter was higher than the first, a positive sign for the third quarter.
Industrial growth rate was 13.7 per cent and total investment increased 17.1 per cent over the same period last year thanks to the city's stimulus packages, trades promotion policies and calls for investment.
GDP in last six months reached VND162 trillion (US$8.5 billion), with export turnover of $10 billion and import turnover of $9 billion.
The city's VND185 billion ($9.7 million) fund for poverty elimination fed 39,660 families. The city's welfare system was also in healthy shape with 943 successful jobseekers thanks to the social employment fund, 319,760 poor people receiving healthcare insurance, and 10,221 disable people receiving free bus tickets for life.
Hai directed the related agencies to address problems with finance – banking, procedures for loan incentives, market balancing, site clearance and compensation. He also reminded the agencies to give priority to welfare, cultural and environmental management.
The targets for the 2006-10 five-year period were also discussed at the meeting focusing on boosting production for export, improving the investment environment, and preventing inflation.
