Idyllic island to hit economic bigtime

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has signed a plan to transform Phu Quoc island district in southern Kien Giang Province into an economic and tourism centre.

Under the plan, Phu Quoc will be divided into three urban areas: Duong Dong, An Thoi and Cua Can.

The Duong Dong area will be the district's centre, which will include the island's administrative offices, international trade and finance centres, community and service facilities, and an urban complex.

The An Thoi area will house the airport and sea ports while the Cua Can area will have a conservation area and focus on developing tourism and agriculture.

Tourism is the largest economic sector in the district with 15 ecological tourism areas and three tourism complexes in Bai Vong, Vinh Dam and Bai Truong.

The plan is also calling for the construction of a transportation route linking An Thoi Seaport and Phu Quoc Airport.
