Giant vessel stops at Viet Nam port
The Mathilde Maersk, the largest ever ship to call on a Vietnamese port, will inaugurate a new , 18-day direct route to the West Coast of the US today.
The Mathilde Maersk, a 367m-long container vessel that can transport 115,993 tonnes of cargo called at SP-PSA International Terminal yesterday.
The new route will provide a major stimulus to the maritime economy.
"We have worked hard to meet this demand and to make it feasible to call at Vung Tau with the largest vessels ever to call at a Vietnamese port, and are thrilled to introduce such a competitive and reliable product to this exciting and growing market," said Peter Smidt-Nielsen, general director of Maersk Line in Viet Nam and Cambodia.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Jesper Praestensgaard, CEO of Maersk Line in Asia Pacific, said shipping has played a key role in globalisation and is an enabler for increased global trade.
"Container shipping provides safe, reliable, inexpensive and readily-available transportation," he said.
"I believe that containerised trade will continue to grow and this offers great opportunities in an emerging market like Viet Nam," he said.
Major export commodities from Viet Nam to the US include garments, furniture, footwear, coffee and seafood.
