Telcoms to set fixed call charges

Telecom companies will be allowed to set their own charges for landline calls within their provinces and cities from January next year, according to Le Nam Thang, deputy minister of Information and Communications.

Thang said the charge for all telecom services would not be controlled by the State, which would only control prices of some kinds of services and during a sudden change in the world market.

Last year, the inner provincial landline service was adjusted to VND200 a minute, instead of the previous VND120, 400 and 700, while the subscription charge was VND20,000 per month, a VND7,000 less than the previous price.

With those charges, domestic telecoms had a weak growth in revenue.

"Landline telephone is still in development and its revenue is not high, Thang said.

By the end of last year, the country had 20 million landline subscribers, of which 6 million were wireless.

Viet Nam has seven fixed phone providers, including the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (Which accounts for 70 per cent), Viettel, EVN Telecom, Sai Gon Postel, FPT Telecom, VTC Telecom and CMC Telecom.
