VietAir set up to serve remote areas
Duong Tri Thanh, Vietnam Airlines deputy general director, spoke with Thoi bao Kinh te Viet Nam (Viet Nam Economic Times) about the new joint stock carrier VietAir.
The Government has given the go ahead for Vietnam Airlines to set up the joint stock carrier VietAir. Is there a need for another carrier?
There is a need to service cities and provinces that are remote, difficult to access and have poor airports.
The establishment of VietAir is important for the development and expansion of Vietnam Airlines. In the document dated October 18, 2007, the Prime Minister gave permission for Vietnam Airlines to establish a joint stock carrier. This was not rushed into. It was the result of a lot of research and numerous feasibility studies.
How will VietAir operate?
VietAir will fly to small localities with limited airport facilities. VietAir will provide low-cost aviation services. It will also contribute funds to establish subsidiary companies. These companies will offer aviation taxi and helicopter services. Presently, Vietnam Airlines is calling upon shareholders to contribute funds.
When will the first flight take place?
VietAir has been established. Last year's economic crisis hit the aviation industry quite hard. Competition in the aviation sector became fiercer than ever. Therefore, investment decisions have to be carefully thought through.
Will there be a conflict of interest between Vietnam Airlines and VietAir?
Once VietAir becomes operational, Vietnam Airlines will have in effect a partner and the two will support each other. They will exploit different routes. VietAir will offer short-haul flights while Vietnam Airlines will offer long – and medium-haul flights.
The foundation of VietAir will contribute to the common development of the local aviation sector.
How about Vietnam Airlines' development plan this year?
This year is a transitional year for the national flag carrier's 2015-20 development strategy. The carrier will focus on developing and upgrading air-crew, training pilots, purchasing equipment, investing in IT and other infrastructure facilities.
