Iceland’s volcano withers Vietnam fruits

Vietnam’s export fruits, garments, footwear, ornamental fish are stuck at airports because of the European flight ban. Vietnamese seafood companies are now like cats on hot bricks because they may fail to attend the important Brussels seafood trade fair.

Many tons of goods in stock

Vu Hai Thanh, General Director of the Tan Son Nhat Cargo Services (TSC) on April 19, pointing to the consignments of goods in stock, noted that the consignments should have been carried away by Cargo Lux (Luxembourg) on April 17. The air traffic ban in Europe has delayed their departure.

An officer estimated that some 20 batches of commodities of 30 tons are ready for export. Thanh explained that this is just a portion of commodities left in Vietnam because air carriers such as Vietnam Airlines, Cargo Lux, Lufthansa, Air France-KLM, Thai Airways could not provide flights from HCM City to Europe.

According to Thanh, forwarding companies have stopped receiving orders to carry goods to Europe. On April 19, Cargo Lux and Air France-KLM sent faxes stating that they would not accept orders to carry commodities to Europe on April 19 and 20 because airports were still closed.

THH, an officer at a freight and forwarding company, revealed that they have refused orders to Europe. Previously, the company carried 4-5 tons of commodities to Europe daily.

As planned, the company will try to carry one ton of clothes to Munich on April 22 and two more tons on April 24, but it is still not sure if this is possible.

Meanwhile, fresh fruit exports have suffered from the flight ban. As flights to Europe have been canceled since April 16, fresh dragon fruit and rambutan of Rong Do Company have been left at Tan Son Nhat Airport.

Mai Xuan Thin, Business Director of Rong Do Company, complained that he has lost money due to the flight ban. The company has to sell the fruits domestically at the prices much lower than the export rate. Still, he added that the volume is not too high, so their loss is not enormous.

According to Thanh from TCS, the volume has been increasing day after day, while stocks are limited in capacity. If considering the volume of commodities to three airports in Paris, Frankfurt and Moscow alone, every day, TCS sends no less than 20 tons. The volume of commodities to Europe accounts for 30-35 percent of the total volume of commodities exports of TCS (100-200 tons per day). Thanh listed exports carried by air to Europe, inclduing clothes, footwear, fruits, tuna and ornamental fish.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese seafood companies are not sure if they can attend the Brussels seafood trade fair on April 27. This is a very important opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises to seek clients and sign contracts. Nguyen Tuan Anh, General Director of NTACO in An Giang province, said that enterprises have booked flights for April 25, but no one knows if they can take flights on that day.
