Can Tho plans $2b monorail
The first phase of Can Tho City's elevated monorail will cost US$2 billion to build, according to a report made to the Mekong Delta city authorities on Monday.
In its report, the Transport Development and Strategy Institute under the Ministry of Transport said the monorail would be invested under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) form, with 50 per cent of capital from the State budget and 50 per cent from the project investor.
In its report the institute outlined two possible routes for the monorail, both starting at O Mon Coach Station in O Mon District and travelling to Luu Huu Phuoc Park in Ninh Kieu District.
In the first plan, the 38.6-km monorail divides into two branches at Luu Huu Phuoc Park – one running through the South Can Tho Urban Area to Cai Cui Port in Cai Rang District, and the other connecting with April 30 Road, ending at the IC4 intersection at the Can Tho Bridge.
In the 36.6-km second plan, at Luu Huu Phuoc Park the monorail continues running to Quang Trung Bridge, the IC4 intersection and April 30 Road then loops back to the park.
Construction of the first phase is expected to begin in 2015 for completion in 2018, with the second phase expanding across the city in 2020.
