Barriers to seafood exports to EU

Vietnamese seafood businesses licensed to ship products to the European Union are facing difficulties with their exports due to the EU’s illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing regulation.

Under the regulation, fishing vessel owners and processors must meet tough requirements, including recording the date of the catches, the quantity of the products and certification of the purchase.

Experts suggested that businesses shift to other markets that do not have such barriers, such as Japan, Thailand, the Republic of Korea and Canada, to maintain their exports in the short-term. In addition, businesses should assist fishermen in recording every catch and end random operations by establishing fishing teams and working in a professional manner.

They also suggested that the State boost trade promotions to help businesses expand to markets outside the EU and grant certificates of origin for catches.
