Tour firms under microscope
The HCM City's Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has discovered several incidents in which outbound-tour companies in the city are operating without licences and offering low-quality services.
The department said there were several outbound tour companies playing the role of a dealer or operating without a licence at all.
Several outbound tour companies are allowed to operate as a dealer for other businesses, but they are organising tours for customers also, which is illegal, according to La Quoc Khanh, Deputy Director of the department.
In addition, numerous new, small tour companies tended to co-operate with each other in seeking a large number of customers for one company to organise tours, but neglected tour quality, Khanh said.
More than 610 tour companies have been granted licences, of which 300 get outbound tour licences, according to the department.
Khanh said there were only around 10 inspectors at the department level.
Inspectors should co-operate with local culture and information departments, which can be more time-consuming.
It was difficult for tour bookers to recognise tour quality or if the tour companies had a licence, the department said.
The department has asked local authorities at the district level to review and check travel business activities in the city.
