New City overpass plan sought

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has ordered the Ministry of Transport, the HCM City People's Committee and other authorities to consider a new plan to build an overpass system in the city and submit their report to the prime minister for a final decision.

The request was followed by a recent petition of the HCM City People's Committee to the Government to reduce the area for construction.

Under the current plan, land clearance compensation would be too high, according to the committee.

The modified overpass routes No.2 and 4 would be linked to Tan Son Nhat Airport, downtown HCM City and the new Thu Thiem urban area.

According to the transportation development plan through 2020, the city will build four overpass routes to help reduce traffic congestion.

The 12km-high overpass stretching for 8.5km with four lanes will be built by South Korea-based GS Engineering and Construction Company in Build-Operate-Transfer form.

The company has withdrawn from the Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal Route last year, one of the four overpasses of the project. A Hong Kong-based company plans to invest in the project.

According to the HCM City Department of Transport, with the current transport system, it takes an hour to reach the Thu Thiem urban area from Tan Son Nhat Airport.

When the overpass is completed, vehicles will need 12 minutes, travelling at 80km per hour.

According to the city's plan, there are four routes to be built through 2020. The first route begins at Tan Binh District's Cong Hoa Street, stretching along Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal and connecting at Nguyen Huu Canh Street, District 1.

The second route starts at District 10's To Hien Thanh Street and ends at belt road No 2.

The third route link with the second route at To Hien Thanh Street, spanning along Le Hong Phong and Ly Thai To streets and connect with Nguyen Van Linh Street.

The fourth route links National Highway No.13, passing Sai Gon River to Dien Bien Phu Street. All of the four routes link with each other.
