Telco investment aids New Year calls
Mobile operators for the first time in 15 years successfully prevented communication breakdowns over the Tet holiday.
Pham Vinh Tho, Head of the Telecommunications Managing Board at the Viet Nam Posts and Telecommunications Group (Which manages VinaPhone and MobiFone), said that glitches had been prevented despite the dramatic increase in the number of calls and messages on New Year's Eve and the first day of the New Year.
A representative from VinaPhone said that up to 98 percent of calls and messages had been successful during Tet.
According to MobiFone, the company met subscriber demand on New Year's Eve, the busiest time of year.
Tao Duc Thang, Deputy Director of Viettel, said the number of calls on New Year's Eve this year were 2.5 times higher than usual, while text messages were seven times higher.
MobiFone, VinaPhone and Viettel, the country's biggest network operators, have more than 100 million subscribers.
Nguyen Thang, from Ninh Binh Province, said that he, like most people who live in cities, returned home for the holiday and relied on their mobile phones to contact friends. He said it was particularly important this year because Valentines Day fell during the Lunar New Year holiday.
To meet demand, mobile operators set up thousands of base transceiver stations (BTS) before Tet.
Operators also used more mobile broadcast vehicles to meet demand.
