Provinces urged to increase hi-tech, intellectual industry

President Nguyen Minh Triet urged Binh Duong Province to continue boosting development of its high-tech and intellectual industry, while improving human resources capacity to meet the increasing demands of the local economy.

He made the statement yesterday while visiting the province in celebration of Lunar New Year.

Triet also said the province needed to boost development of the service sector so that it would make up a larger proportion of the local economic structure. This sector would create high value-added products, especially in the services of banking, finance, insurance and information technology, he said.

He said that this year, the province needed to make more efforts to boost its economic growth in order to top of the list of localities with high-economic development.

Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Nguyen Hoang Son said that the province increased its GDP by 10.3 percent last year. Export turnover increased by 5.8 percent to US$6.9 billion and the number of poor households decreased by 2 percent, he added.

During his stay, President Triet took the opportunity to visit and offer gifts to the province's Vietnamese Heroic Mothers and veterans.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung is currently paying a visit to central provinces on the occasion of the Lunar New Year.

In a meeting with leaders in Quang Tri Province, Dung expressed his wish that the province would bring into full play its potentials and advantages, especially with its proximity to the East-West economic corridor and its abundance of land, forest and sea areas, to boost development of its industry, services and tourism sectors.

He expressed his hope that the province would successfully implement its socio-economic targets set for this year.

Dung suggested the province reconsider its potential for hydro-electricity, cement production and forest product processing, and define the focus of its investment to ensure sustainable development. He also recommended improvements to the province's human resources.

The leader encouraged the province to boost administrative reforms, and its prevention and combat against smuggling and trade fraud; to focus on ensuring social welfare policies, especially hunger eradication and poverty reduction; and to effectively manage its natural resources and environment.

He asked leaders of the province to set socio-economic development goals and targets for the new term.

Dung also gave his opinions about the province's current infrastructure plans and investments for Dong Ha Town and economic areas such as Lao Bao.

Achievement

On this occasion, Dung expressed his appreciation for the efforts and achievements made by officers of the border guard, customs office, tax office and guarantee office at the Lao Bao International Border Gate.

He said he hoped that the relevant gate officers would create favourable conditions for boosting trade between Viet Nam and Laos in particular, and Viet Nam and ASEAN countries and other countries in general, as well as prevent and combat against smuggling and other crimes.

Last year, GDP in Quang Tri Province grew 9.1 percent and the number of poor households decreased by 3.1 percent.

On this occasion, Dung visited the Road 9 Cemetery where more than 10,000 war martyrs were laid to rest.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Dung instructed the central province of Thua Thien – Hue to focus its investments into outer districts as part of the plan to turn the province into a city under control of the central Government.

Dung referred to Political Bureau Decision No 48 during his visit to the province and said that outlying districts, including Nam Dong and A Luoi, needed more investment.

The PM paid a pre – Tet visit and presented gifts to families in Thua Thien – Hue's Nam Dong District on Sunday, where 43 per cent of the population are ethnic minorities.

He praised the district Party committee, authorities and residents for their development achievements and for their efforts in overcoming difficulties.

Dung also asked them to do more to alleviate poverty through education and vocational training, especially for Co Tu ethnic minorities.

To aid in the district's economic development, Dung agreed to a request to hasten construction of a local section of the HCM National Highway and said he would provide assistance to build a new cultural and sports centre. In a working session with provincial authorities, Dung asked the province to make use of its resources to become a leading centre in central Viet Nam in culture, tourism, science-technology, health, and interdisciplinary education.

The PM added that the province should develop a good urban planning programme, invest in infrastructure development for services and the promising fields of tourism, information technology, ocean-based businesses and Tam Giang Lagoon.

During his visit, Dung visited heritage sites in the Hue Citadel and encouraged more tourism development. He said Hue's heritage should be restored and promoted but the province shouldn't "make new relics".
