PM calls for feasibility study on wind project

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked for the details of a pilot project to produce wind power in central Ninh Thuan Province or any other suitable site to be submitted to him by May.

Electricity Viet Nam Group has been entrusted with the task.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has asked to use official development assistance provided by the Danish Government for the project.

With more than 3,000km of coastline and 8.6 per cent of its area with high-velocity winds, Viet Nam has great wind-power potential, especially in Binh Dinh, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Lam Dong, Tra Vinh, and Soc Trang provinces, the ministry said.

Le Tuan Phong, deputy head of the ministry's Energy Department, said some domestic and foreign investors are planning to invest in wind power plants.

The country's power demand is increasing by around 10 per cent annually.
