ADB supports water supply and sanitation improvement in Vietnam

Governor Nguyen Van Giau of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) and Mr. Ayumi Konishi, Country Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), signed USD 45 million loan for the Central Region Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project in Hanoi on February 2.

The Project will provide clean water and hygiene sanitation facilities to 350,000 people in the six central coast provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Nam and Binh Dinh where the poverty levels are higher than the national average. Communities in the project provinces will be fully involved in the implementation of the project with grants and credit being provided directly to households to build latrines. Poor households will be supported with grants while credit will go to households which are not designated as poor through a revolving fund managed by the Vietnam Women’s Union.

The Project is totally worth USD 50 million, of which USD 5 million comes from the Vietnamese Government and project beneficiaries as the counterpart fund. The ADB’s loan has 32 year term with a grace period of 8 years. The Project will support the country’ efforts to achieve the national development targets and Millennium/Vietnam Development Goals related to people’s access to clean water supply and sanitation.
