Car sales break records in October
The car market has become hotter than ever as people rush to buy cars for Tet. October sales satisfied every car manufacturer.
11,762 cars were sold in October 2009, an increase of 103 percent over October 2008, according to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA).
Passenger cars saw the highest growth rate with 3,866 cars sold in October, an increase of 171 percent over the same period of 2008. Commercial vehicles grew 94 percent over October 2008 with 5,279 units sold and sales of 4WD/MPV increased by 59 percent with 2,617 units sold.
Well-known brand names all had sales higher than October 2008. Mercedes Benz, for example, sold 334 cars, an increase of 80 percent over 2008, while Honda sold 431 cars, increasing by 51 percent. Toyota, had a slower growth rate than other manufacturers, but still led the market in sales with 3,017 cars sold.
GM Daewoo witnessed the highest sales growth rate of 276 percent with 1,636 cars sold. Ford Vietnam sold 1,040 cars, an increase of 191 percent over October 2008.
Passenger cars and five-seater or less models were the best sellers of October. GM Daewoo’s Spark LT 0.8 had impressive sales of 500 units, while 128 Spark LT Super 1.0 doubled sales from September and additionally 361 Gentra SX 1.5s and 340 Lacetti EX 1.6s were sold.
As for Toyota, Corrola Atils remained a favorite model, with sales of 650 units in October. The more luxurious model, Camry 2.4G, also saw sales triple that of September, with 284 units sold.
As for Honda, Civic versions all had satisfactory sales with a total of 321 cars sold, up by 100 units over September
