Ben Tre clam fishery receives Stewardship certification

The clam fishery in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre has received Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for meeting the organisation’s sustainability and management standards.

The MSC Chief Executive, Rupert Howes, said this is the first small-scale and community-based fishery in Southeast Asia to achieve the MSC certificate.

The Deputy Director of the province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Tran Thi Nga said, “the certification gives us the right to promote local products with the trusted MSC eco-label to customers worldwide.”

Ben Tre province has over 15,000 ha of clam fisheries, the largest acreage in Vietnam, of which 8,000 ha are currently farmed. The province’s clams are sold on domestic markets and exported to Europe, the US , Japan and China .

The MSC, an international non-profit organisation, was established with the aim of encouraging sustainable fishing practices.

In 2005, Vietnam and the MSC signed a Memorandum of Understanding declaring their joint commitment to encourage sustainable fishing by promoting and facilitating MSC certification.
