Electronic goods could fall short of year-end demand
The supply of consumer electronic goods may fall short of the expected surge in local demand during the year-end season, retailers say.
Lien An Thach, Sales Manager of the Cho Lon Electronics supermarket chain in Ho Chi Minh City, said they received limited deliveries of many television products from distributors, with Samsung and TCL the only two brands maintaining quantities.
Another retailer in the city said since the beginning of this year many companies have cut back on production amid the global economic slump. The output of several products including mobile phones, laptops and LCD television sets this year has been reduced to around 60-70 percent of last year, he said.
Le Thanh Hang, an official from Canon Vietnam, said distributors of electronic goods had also reduced imports, leading to declines in inventory at retailers.
Industry insiders said sales of electronic goods in Vietnam have been low so far this year. As a result, importers have been reluctant to place big orders.
However, the market was still waiting for better news during the year-end shopping season, which is usually the time when electronics sales peak.
Mike Asao, Canon representative in Vietnam, said he expected sales of digital and electronic goods at the end of this year to increase 20-30 percent over last year.
Vietnam imports most consumer electronic products. Total imports of electronic and computer products are expected to reach US$3.8 billion this year, up 2.7 percent from 2008.
