Rice production in Northern Vietnam increases by 80,000 tonnes
Northern Vietnam’s summer-autumn rice crop is predicted to achieve 5.8 million tonnes, up 80,000 tonnes compared to last year.
The forecast was made by the Cultivation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) at a meeting in Hanoi on September 10 to prepare plans for the coming winter-spring rice crop.
Average rice yield in the northern provinces is expected to reach 4.94 tonnes per hectare. Some provinces have higher rice productivity, such as Nam Dinh (5.3 tonnes per hectare) and Bac Ninh (5.57 tonnes per hectare).
Although the rice output is high, the average of rice cultivation in the northern region this year is only 1.17 million hectares, down 36,500 hectares from last year.
The MARD has asked localities to harvest rice promptly to prepare for the next crop.
In the coming winter-spring crop, the northern region is expected to cultivate rice on 550,000-570,000 hectares and earn VND18 million per hectare in terms of production value on average.
