Vietnam Railways, Japan agree contract for Hanoi track work

Vietnam Railways Corp., the state-owned train operator, agreed a 5.5 billion yen (US$60 million) contract with a group of Japanese and local companies for help in building a new line in Hanoi.

East Japan Railway Co.’s consulting unit, Japan Railway Technical Services and other companies will work on the project, according to an e-mailed statement from Japan International Cooperation Agency’s Vietnam office today.

Japan will provide a 4.7 billion yen loan to help pay for the consultation work and next year it may hold talks on financing construction work. The 15-kilometer (9.3 mile) line, stretching from Gia Lam district in the east of Hanoi to Giap Bat in the south, is part of plans to ease congestion in the Vietnamese capital and curb pollution.
