Jan-Aug retail sales rise 18.4 percent
Retail sales in the eight months ending August reached VND742.7 trillion (US$41.7 billion), up 18.4 percent over the same period last year, according to the General Statistics Office in Hanoi.
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City together accounted for about 36 percent of the total figure as retail sales in the two cities increased 17.7 percent from a year ago, the office said.
Vietnam’s economy will benefit from a rebound in global economic growth and from consumer-led demand, London- based Standard Chartered Plc. said in a report published last month.
Consumer prices rose 2 percent in August from a year earlier, the weakest pace since January 2002, the General Statistics Office said.
The retail figures, together with other indicators, show improvement in the economy.
The General Statistics Office said last week industrial output increased an estimated 5.6 percent in the first eight months of 2009 compared to the same period last year, faster than the 5.1 percent recorded in the first seven months.
Industrial output between January and August was valued at VND443.04 trillion ($24.9 billion).
