The fight to scramble for securities brokerage market shares

The brokerage service market for foreign investors is still being controlled by leading securities companies like Saigon Securities Incorporated (SSI), HSC and Bao Viet Securities. Meanwhile, there have been big changes with the market for domestic investors: some securities companies which once topped market segments have fallen behind younger companies.

There are two factors that decide which securities companies win in the race for market shares: brokerage services and capability of providing added services.

The changing picture

In the second quarter of 2009, Sacombank Securities Company (SBS) caused a splash when it jumped up to lead the market segment of brokerage services for domestic investors at the HCM City Stock Exchange. Meanwhile, by the end of Q1, SBS had 18,000 accounts only, ranking 7th among 100 securities companies, after other big names like SSI, Vietcombank Securities, ACB Securities and BVSC.

Another case is Thang Long Securities Company (TSC). Being one of the first established companies, by the end of Q1, 2009, TSC had 15,000 accounts, ranking 12th in the market. In Q2, 2009, TSC jumped to the third position in the market segment at HOSE.

A relatively young securities company, Kim Eng (KEVS), which was established in late 2007 and has 3,000 accounts, is now in the top 10 securities companies holding the biggest shares in the stock brokerage market segment.

Especially, KEVS is leading in the fund certificate brokerage market, accounting for 11 percent of the market share.

Meanwhile, the market has witnessed the stepping back of a big name. The company has been weeded from the top 10 of companies holding the biggest market shares for brokerage for domestic investors, though they are still among the top five securities companies which have the biggest number of accounts (over 30,000 accounts).

Some securities companies belonging to state-owned banks have some 20,000 accounts, belonging to 10 leading companies, but they have modest market shares of brokerage service.

Newly established securities companies have still been facing a lot of difficulties. One securities company which is a joint venture of a joint-stock bank and a securities company planned to attract 5,000 accounts after one year of operation. It has fulfilled just 10 percent of the plan in the last eight months.

Securities companies have been applying a lot of measures to attract more clients. Some of them organise workshops on the stock market to attract investors. The workshop attendants are invited to open accounts to enjoy preferences, including transaction fee reductions. Some other companies have been targeting students of universities or staffs of agencies.
