Southern province boosts seafood exports
Seafood businesses in the southernmost province of Ca Mau, which is famous for its aquatic breeding acreage, are taking a number of measures with the aim of reaping US$665 million in revenues by the end of 2009.
The Secretary General of the Ca Mau Association of Seafood Producers and Exporters, Ly Van Thuan, says provincial enterprises are focusing on buying materials within the province and only importing when absolutely necessary. They pay attention to products with highly added values and resolutely say no to ‘shrimp’ that are contaminated with impurities, he says.
Minh Phu, a local business, has turned to raising medium-sized aquatic products at low prices to meet the increasing demand of world customers in the current context.
Another firm, Dai Duong, has decided to raise purchasing prices to assist farmers. The company has also liased with local fishing and farmers societies and local farmers to breed shrimp on a large scale and ensure a stable supply of shrimp for processing and export. It has diversified its products and expanded its markets to many countries and territories such as Australia, Taiwan and Canada while paying due attention to the domestic market.
