Int’l leather suppliers put on show seeking VN opportunities
Leather suppliers and shoe makers from across the globe are showcasing their products at a Ho Chi Minh City exhibition to find outsourcing opportunities in Asia’s second largest shoe exporter.
Businesses from China, Hong Kong, Mexico, Spain, Germany, Italia, India and France participated in the three day exhibition that opened Thursday, according to the Leather Footwear Association of Vietnam, which organized the event.
Deputy minister of Industry and Trade Bui Xuan Khu said Vietnam’s strong leather and footwear manufacturing and exporting sectors were dependent on imported materials.
The dependency needed to be curbed if the industry aims to meet its goal of doubling exports by 2015, Khu told Thanh Nien after cutting the ribbon to open the exhibition.
Vietnam exported US$4.76 billion in shoes and leather products last year compared to $3.99 billion in 2007.
The industry earned $2.77 billion from in the first eight months and would see a decline in exports as fewer orders were being placed by international customers recently, said the association.
