City okays plan for retail network
City officials have approved a plan to develop the retail and wholesale network in HCM City to meet increased demand.
Nguyen Thi Hong, deputy chairwoman of the municipal People’s Committee, said the plan called for construction of new supermarkets, shopping centres and renovation of traditional markets over the next six years.
Among the 238 markets in the city, many are unregulated and cause street disorder, traffic jams and pollution.
Some so-called squatter markets are not inspected closely by the city and lack adequate hygiene.
Street markets in the city’s centre which block traffic flow, cause pollution and lead to public disorder will be closed.
The city will upgrade and repair regulated markets.
The city administration has urged local districts to outline plans for upgrading or building new supermarkets in line with the development of the new retail network.
She said domestic and foreign investors were more interested in pouring money into major trading centres to meet the demand of younger people who had high incomes.
Hong said the city would create favourable conditions for multinationals to invest in trading centres and supermarkets.
She said the traditional wet markets, as well as the 84 supermarkets in the city, were serving the city well.
