Software sector eyes 10% growth
The Vietnamese software industry is expecting a growth rate of just 10 per cent this year, information technology experts have said.
If the forecast is accurate, growth in the country will be half of last year’s figure and a third of the 2007 growth rate.
Despite falling growth, 10 per cent is still an encouraging figure, said Tran Phuc Hong, deputy director of TMA Solutions Company.
NEC Solutions Viet Nam Company reported that its revenue in the fist half of the year was down 30 per cent over the same period last year.
The company said growth began to fall in the second quarter of 2009 compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile FPT Software said it expected growth of 10 per cent this year, compared to last year’s 40 per cent.
In anticipation of falling demand, TMA Solutions set itself a modest financial target for 2009. This year the company focused on training staff to raise standards so that it would be more competitive in the future, it said.
Tinh Van Outsourcing Company also reported that it was going through tough times. A company representative said that a number of US firms had cancelled or postponed orders in the first half of this year.
Most IT firms remain uncertain about the future.
NEC Solutions Viet Nam, a subsidiary of a Japanese company, said its recovery would depend on how well the Japanese economy performed.
However, industry insiders believe the IT industry will begin to show signs of recovery in the second half of this year.
"I think that the recovery will come in the last quarter of this year or the first quarter of next year," Vinh said.
However, FPT Software predicts that the IT sector will recover more slowly than other industries.
"Japan, our biggest partner, expects to see of recovery at the beginning of 2011," a company spokesperson said. "So, we believe that FPT Software’s growth will begin to recover at the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011," the spokesperson said.
