Only 6 percent of coffee output consumed domestically
Vietnam produces more than 1 million tonnes of coffee each year, but only 56,000 tonnes are consumed domestically, accounting for nearly 6 percent of the total country’s output.
Each person in Northern European countries consumes 10kg of coffee a year while Vietnamese people only use 0.64kg annually. Among coffee producers, Vietnam’s domestic consumption volume ranks 19th while Brazil tops the list with an average volume of 5.29kg per person each year. Each year, Brazil consumes around 600,000 tonnes of coffee, equal to more than 50 percent of Vietnam’s coffee output.
In the face of a sharp decline in world coffee prices, Vietnam should better stimulate domestic coffee consumption at an annual growth rate of 7-10 percent in the next five years. However, this will not be easy to do.
Over the past years, the Central Highland province of Dak Lak has led the country in promoting domestic coffee consumption through diverse cultural and tourism activities but the results are still far below expectation. In the long-run, the coffee industry must have a national strategy to stimulate the consumer market.
