VN, Poland eye closer economic co-operation
Poland and Viet Nam will co-operate in shipbuilding and mining as a precursor to wide-ranging economic and investment exchanges, a visiting Polish official has said.
Polish Deputy Economy Minister Adam Szejnfeld told Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Le Danh Vinh at a meeting in Ha Noi last week that a Polish shipyard had held discussions with the Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) on building specialised rescue vessels.
It has also discussed co-operation with the Viet Nam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) in building specialised vessels for use in the oil and gas industry.
Szejnfeld said business in his country also paid special attention to training human resources for the oil industry.
Polish firms have expressed willingness to enter into long-term co-operation with Viet Nam in mining, especially for coal, an area in which Poland is strong and has the latest technologies.
To help Viet Nam develop its shipbuilding and mining sectors, Poland would provide Viet Nam credit worth US$280 million, Szejnfeld said.
Vinh said the two sides would also continue seeking investment and business opportunities in both countries, and had agreed to expand co-operation in areas related to energy, chemicals, and the environment.
Viet Nam, which has plenty of minerals like coal, bauxite, and iron, would offer investment opportunities for Polish companies, he said.
He hoped the first shipbuilding and mining projects would begin in 2010 to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations.
Trade between the two countries was worth $600 million last year, with Viet Nam shipping $500 million worth of goods and services to Poland.
