National architectural firms awarded

BCI Asia, a construction information company, presented awards to the 10 most active architecture firms operating in Viet Nam last Friday.

BCI Asia runs offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Viet Nam and Australia.

The 10 companies winning the annual BCI Asia Top 10 this year are: Archetype Group, Archipel, Cambell Shillinglaw and Partners, NQH Architecture, dwp, TT-As, Kien Truc Nhiet Tam, Site, Ho Thieu Tri Group and VNCC.

The portfolios of these companies totals US$9.2 billion in projects scheduled to start construction in Viet Nam this year.

They include the Tan Binh Commercial Centre and Thu Thiem Star 1 apartment building in HCM City and the Hyatt Giang Vo Complex in Ha Noi.

"The top 10 architectural firms turn the corporate objectives of clients into buildings that work for today’s environment," said BCI Asia managing director Thor Kerr.

"These firms deliver projects efficiently while accounting for rapidly changing economic circumstances and consumer preferences, we see in this year’s portfolios a shift towards green building design," he said.

For BCI Asia’s FuturArc Prize 2009 design competition for green buildings, five Vietnamese won both professional and student categories.

Their designs were the best of 127 final submissions from 882 competition registrations in this international contest organised by BCI’s FuturArc journal.

Doan Thanh Ha’s design for a conceptual community centre project was given first prize in the professional category while Pham Huu Loc’s design for a conceptual community centre won first prize in the student category. Both are from Ha Noi.

This year’s competition provided entrants a choice of a real project in West Jakarta, Indonesia or a hypothetical community centre.

The winning submissions addressed form, space and activity in an innovative manner through green strategies, systems and technologies appropriate for the site and climate.
