SBV Governor meets with ADB Vice – President
Governor Nguyen Van Giau of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) had a meeting in Hanoi on June 22 with Mr. Xiaoyu Zhao, Vice-President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and his delegation.
At the meeting, the Governor highly appreciated ADB’s supports for Vietnam over the past years and informed the guest of Vietnam’s economic situation. He asserted that the Vietnamese economy had achieved initial satisfactory outcomes for the first half of 2009 in spite of the impact of the global economic recession. In regard to the private economic sector, he went on, this sector has played an important role in the economy thanks to its dynamic development. Presently, the capital demand of this sector, especially for medium and long-term resources, is very huge while the banking sector’s capacity remains limited, Mr. Giau said. In addition, the Governor called upon the ADB to continue investing in this sector, with a focus on infrastructure, finance and banking, while helping to seek other concessional resources.
For his part, the Vice-President asserted that the ADB would continue to work closely with the Vietnamese Government with the aim of assisting the development of the private economic sector. The ADB will help Vietnam to develop its infrastructure and financial sector through such investment forms as providing loans, capital contribution, guaranty and technical assistance, Mr. Xiaoyu Zhao confirmed.
During their Vietnam visit on June 22 and 23, Mr. Xiaoyu Zhao and his delegation will have other meetings with leaders of other ministries to discuss how to improve the effectiveness of ADB’s assistance for the private economic sector in Vietnam. The delegation will also meet with representatives of the Foreign Enterprises Association and those commercial banks participating in the ADB’s financial support programs.
