Mobile networks exceed standards

The three biggest mobile networks in Viet Nam – Mobifone; VinaPhone and Viettel – exceed the standards set by the telecommunications industry, according to the Quality Management Department under the Ministry of Information and Communications.

"Since the beginning of the year ,the three mobile networks have focused on improving quality. "After inspecting the three networks we saw that quality standards were very good," said Nguyen Duc Trung, deputy director of the department.

Of the three telecoms giants, Mobifone, is the market leader in almost every criteria from quality to number of customers, but VinaPhone comes a close second.

One of the criteria the department looked into was the connection success rate. VinaPhone recorded a 99.63 per cent success rate, while 99.08 per cent of calls were successful with Viettel and 98.97 per cent with Mobifone.

Voice quality

The department also tested voice quality and found that Mobifone again came out on top – the first time it has done so. The department said the reception was as good as with a fixed phone. However, the department said VinaPhone had made great strides this year in terms of quality of service.

Viettel, on the other hand, had dropped in terms of voice quality compared with last year, the department said.

The industry had come a long way in the last few years, in terms of signal strength, connection rates and voice quality, an industry representative said.

The department announced that it would survey S-Fone and EVN Telecom in the third quarter of this year. The two service providers use the two code division multiple access (CDMA) network.

The ministry said there were now more than 80 million mobile subscribers in Viet Nam.

GTel Mobile, the seventh largest mobile service provider in Viet Nam, has just announced that a new network, Beeline, will be operational next month.

GTel Mobile, whose user numbers begin 0199, had earlier asked the Ministry of Information and Communications to let its subscriber numbers begin 099. However, the prefix is already being used by the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Group. The seven mobile service providers are now VinaPhone, Mobifone, Viettel, S-Fone, EVN Telecom, Viet-namobile and GTel Mobile.

As competition intensifies mobile networks are racing to attract customers by organising promotion campaigns. GTel Mobile, as the new kid on the block, will have to pull out all the stops, according to industry insiders.

GTel Mobile received its operation licence at the beginning of this year.
