In crisis, businesses give money not trips

As businesses are still facing big difficulties, they have been trying to cut down as many expenses as possible, and even cutting outings for their staffs.

Director of Kim Khue Advertisement and Trade Company Nguyen Thi Minh Nghia has decided not to organise a trip to Sa Pa for her staff as previously planned. Instead of this, Nghia has decided to give one-month salary to labourers. With the money, her staff can design specific tours for themselves and their families or use the money for other purposes.

Nghia said that she really wanted to organise a trip for members of the company as a trip can help staffs better understand each other and build up a culture for a company.

Another reason that made Nghia decide to give money instead of a trip was that it would have cost a lot of money and time to organise a trip. If they had gone on vacation on the weekend or on a holiday, they would have had to bear extra meal and service fees, while if they had gone on normal days, they would have had to take time off work with the company struggling to get sales.

“However, it seems that my staffs are not really interested in travelling, partially because they are too tired from work, and partially because they prefer getting money to spend on other items. As prices keep rising, people feel that they need to tighten their belts,” she said.

Son, Director of an electronics distribution company in Hanoi, related that he has decided to reward ½ month salary to his staff instead of organising a trip for the whole company. He thinks that a trip would have cost double this.

“Of course, they are not happy by my decision. However, they understand that it is necessary to practice thrift in the context of economic crisis,” Son said.

Though Phu Thanh’s business has been going smoothly, the company’s managers still have not thought of a tourism plan for the whole company. Phu Thanh’s Deputy Director Tran Duc Quang said that he still needs to arrange time for a trip in order to avoid affecting production.

“In previous years, we went on vacation in May or June, but we may delay the plan until September,” he said.

Many bosses of businesses are now straining every nerve to think about where to go this summer in the context of financial difficulties. However, it seems that this is the work of small bosses only, while the staffs of big corporations and foreign-invested enterprises still will enjoy trips in the summer.

The director of a big telecom company in Hanoi related that he always encourages his staff to have relaxation time to refresh themselves after a long period of working. He said that trips help refresh people and improve the creativeness of people.
