Hanjin Shipping to sail Vietnam-US direct
Hanjin Shipping will begin tomorrow a direct service between Vietnam and the US, the South Korean company has announced.
Named SJX (South East & Japan Express), the new service will take advantage of the prosperous Vietnamese and Southeast Asian markets, which are showing constant growth despite the global economic downturn.
Hanjin says the new terminal at Cai Mep deepwater port in Ba RiaVung Tau Province can now accommodate “mega-sized” vessels. Also, the restrictions caused by tides will soon be eased, enabling timely vessel operation.
The six 4,000-TEU container ships deployed on the route will travel from Port Kelang in Malaysia to Ho Chi Minh City, head across the Pacific Ocean to Long Beach and Oakland, California, then sail back to Port Kelang via Tokyo.
William Rooney, Hanjin Shipping’s managing director for North and South America, says the SJX service is also aimed at meeting the growing demand by US importers for a direct service from Vietnam.
Hanjin’s rivals APL and MOL started a weekly shipping container service from Vietnam directly to the US on June 4.
The APL Denver departed from the brand new Saigon Port-PSA deepwater container terminal on the Cai Mep River in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, while MOL’s Pacific Southwest Express sailed out of nearby Tan Cang-Cai Mep Port.
