Food, consumer prices fall in HCM City
The prices of many kinds of fresh foodstuff and consumer goods at markets in HCM City have decreased significantly over the last week due to falling demand.
"With the coming of the summer vacation, many canteens in HCM City schools have stopped buying chicken", said the director of an enterprise in Go Vap District.
The increase in supply of chicken had also contributed to the falling prices, he added.
Industrial and Tam Hoang chicken prices are now VND6,000-7,000 per kilo lower than last week at VND20,000-37,000 per kilo and VND48,000-53,000 per kilo, respectively.
Retail prices of pork and freshwater fish at many markets have dropped by between VND2,000-4,000.
The prices of seafood and vegetables have also gone down.
"Now I have to pay only VND5,000 for a kilo of tomatoes instead of VND8,000," said a shopper at Thu Duc market, adding that "prices of many kinds of vegetables like salad, morning glory, okra and others have also fallen by VND500-2,000 per kilo."
Kim Vang, owner of a stall at Kim Bien market in District 5, said wholesales prices of readymade garments had decreased by 10-30 per cent.
Huynh Quoc Bao of the Binh Tay Market management board said in the wake of a drop in purchasing power during the rainy season, petty traders were having to cut prices to stimulate demand and be more competitive.
Tran Quang Trung, a pork distributor to the Hoc Mon agriculture wholesale market, said "Last month I sold an average of 40 pigs every night, but now I can sell only 30."
