Eurocham goes with green
The European Chamber of Commerce, or Eurocham, kicked off its GreenBiz marketing campaign in Hanoi Wednesday by opening a two-day exhibition of European green technology.
Eurocham said Vietnam’s future development is very much dependent on continued trade and investment, and sees infrastructure development as a priority for both the government and business.
At the same time, environmental concerns are becoming more pressing as the country develops and the impact of rapid economic growth and urbanization is becoming evident.
Vietnam has continuously increased its investment in infrastructure, reaching a ratio of 9-10 percent of GDP by 2005, an impressive figure for a country at this stage of development, according to Eurocham.
The business grouping said demand is accelerating rapidly.
It is projected that future annual infrastructure investment will need to constitute at least 11 percent of GDP in order to meet the government’s targets for access to electricity, water, transport and telecommunications.
There is a big market for improvements in conventional energy generation facilities. The total investment needed in the energy sector for 2006-2025 is projected at US$72.55 million.
The government has set targets for the ratio of renewable energy at 3 percent in 2010, 5 percent in 2020 and 11 percent in 2050.
Water is another sector where the investment demand is huge, both for Greenfield water supply systems and the modification of existing facilities.
In order to meet the Millennium Development Goals by 2020, it is estimated that the present investment tally of $600 million will have to be increased four-fold.
