City, Mekong Delta mull trade plan
Details of a programme on trade and investment promotion between HCM City and the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta were discussed at a working session chaired by the municipal People’s Committee Chairman Le Hoang Quan last week.
Quan agreed with the Southwestern Steering Board that a comprehensive co-operation agreement between the city and 13 provinces of the Mekong Delta would be mutually beneficial.
The session also discussed a cooperation agreement on order and security between the two localities that is set for signing on June 19 during the Mekong Delta Economic Co-operation 2009 forum or MDEC An Giang 2009 organised by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the National Committee for International Economic Cooperation and the Steering Committee for the Southwestern Region.
The two-day forum, the third of its kind, will begin on June 18 with particular focus on developing human resources in the Mekong Delta wards to ensuring sustainable development of the region. The forum is expected to attract about 500 delegates from local and foreign enterprises and agencies, education experts and scientists.
The notion of a comprehensive pact between HCM City and the Mekong Delta region was initially based on earlier agreements signed between the city and provinces like Bac Lieu and Soc Trang.
The agreements aim to lure domestic and foreign investments into the region and have local businesses expand their market.
