Vietnam produces its first ton of DAP fertilizer
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung announced the first DAP (diammonium phosphate) fertilizer made in Vietnam. At the opening ceremony, he pressed a button to start the first DAP packing fertilizer production line in Vietnam on April 22.
The DAP fertilizer plant was built by Vietnam National Chemical Corporation (VINACHEM) at cost of US$172 million in Dinh Vu economic zone, Hai Phong City.
The plant is the first project to produce DAP fertilizer on a large scale plan in the country.
The plant is designed to have a capacity of 330,000 tons per year with a total investment of VND3 trillion.
With 330,000 tons, DAP fertilizer will be able to meet the equivalent of one million tons of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) fertilizer and 100,000 tons urea.
The plant will meet half of the yearly local demand, and save $60 million per year in fertilizer imports.
Operational, the manufacturer is expected to, through VAT, contribute VND330 billion to the exchequer every year.
Vietnam was estimated to have used 8.3 million tons of fertilizers in 2008. The country had to spend $1.47 billion on importing more than 2.9 million tons.
To balance supply and demand, the chemical, oil and gas sector has been asked to fully exploit the production capacity of existing fertilizer plants to guarantee a minimum of 950,000 tons of urea, alongside speeding up construction of Ninh Binh, Bac Giang and Ca Mau fertilizer plants.
