Value of seafood exports drops in first 4 months
In the first four months of this year, Vietnamese seafood exports dropped by 7.1 percent from the same period last year to US$1.058 billion, according to the General Statistics Office.
In the reviewed period, the value of seafood exports fell by 7 percent to US$744 million compared with the same period last year.
However, in April alone, the export value of the fisheries industry exported US$310 million worth of products, up from March, said the office.
Luong Le Phuong, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), put this down to a fall in demand from key seafood export markets such as the US, the EU and Japan.
In the first four months of the year, Vietnamese seafood exports fell by 13 percent to the EU, by 9 percent to Japan and by 3.3 percent to the US.
The export value of tra and basa catfish slid by 2.46 percent down to US$265 million.
However, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) expect seafood prices to rise in the near future. The sector has also found new export markets such as Spain, where the export value of Vietnamese seafood rose by five percent to US$30 million in April compared with March’s figures.
This month, the export value of frozen shrimp to the Republic of Korea rose by 17.8 percent to US$15.5 million, making it the fifth largest importer of Vietnamese shrimp. The value of frozen shrimp to ASEAN also increased, by 16.1 percent to US$36.2 million.
