Cell phone subscribers to have refusal option for SMS ads

Mobile telecom service providers have to label advertisement messages and allow subscribers to refuse them from May onwards, according to a document issued by the Vietnam Computer Emergency Response Team.

The document, released as a solution for preventing SMS spam, says all providers have to inform their subscribers about the refusal option by sending them an SMS announcement on May 2 and 16; and June 2 and 16.

This announcement should include the information that subscribers can send a text massage that says “TC” to the provider and stop receiving advertisements.

The document also asks businesses that provide advertising services via SMS or Internet services to complete registration of their control codes before May 30 and to inform subscribers about advertising forms, the cost of sending messages, and a toll free phone number for complaints about spam.
