Car imports up again, motorbike imports down

The import turnover of cars under the form of complete built units (CBU) has increased again in the last time, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The real import turnover in March 2009 was by far higher than the estimates given previously by GSO.

The office has reported that the real CBU car import turnover in March 2009 was approximately 4,300 cars worth nearly $88mil, much higher than the figures of 2,500 cars and $60mil in value predicted before by the office.

GSO has predicted that the import turnover of CBU cars will continue increasing in April 2009, with 4,500 cars to be imported with the import value of some $92mil.

As such, the car import turnover has been increasing since the beginning of the year. The imported number of cars was 1,300 in the first month of the year, while it rose to 2,000 cars in the next month, and reached 4,300 cars in March

Meanwhile, GSO has reported the sharp decrease in the import turnover of motorbikes

In March 2009, 18,000 motorbikes were imported, worth $29mil. It is expected that the motorbike import turnover will continue declining in April to 10,000 motorbikes with the import turnover of $16mil.

If counting on motorbike parts, the total motorbike import turnover in March would reach over $63mil, while the figure is thought to decrease to $45mil in April.

In related news, Ford Vietnam has announced it is strengthening marketing programmes with customer care activities in order to boost sales. The manufacturer plans to introduce its new pick up Ranger model. The model was introduced before in Thailand.

Meanwhile, Mercedes Benz Vietnam has announced that all the clients who purchase Mercedes cars between April 21 and April 30 will enjoy the new ownership registration tax of 5% (6% in Hanoi) instead of 10-12%.

Despite the economic difficulties, the manufacturer has reported the sharp increases in car sales in the last time. In the first three months of the year, it sold 712 cars, an increase of 345 over the same period of the last year. As such, the manufacturer sold 432 cars in March alone, an increase of 200% over February, or 70% higher than the average market’s growth rate.

Mercedes Benz Vietnam has announced the plan to invest $3.3mil in the production line of GLK car model which is expected to be available on the market from June 2009.
