Vietnam’s external economic conference opens
The 2nd international conference on Vietnam’s external economy opened in Hanoi on Mar. 17 with an agenda focusing on impacts of the global economic crisis, measure and the government’s counter measures and the national development strategy.
Speaking to Vietnamese and foreign representatives, including leaders of many transnational groups and businesses and scholars, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung said in the downturn of the world economy, Vietnam also faces numerous difficulties, such as rising inflation increased, and shrinking economy declined.
Hung however, said a series of measures taken by the government have begun to take effect, with showing small signs of recovery particularly in February. He added that there is a hope that the economy will gain momentum in the last months of the year, even at a lower rate compared to previous years.
The deputy PM stressed that Vietnam welcomes and is ready to listen to international organisations’ opinions to find the best ways to deal with these short-term difficulties.
During the two-day conference, Vietnamese government leaders and representatives of major Vietnamese and foreign businesses will attend 20 round-table talks on 20 important topics, including the prospect of Vietnam’s economy in the changing global economy, Vietnam’s monetary policy, Vietnam’s business environment and expectation, Vietnamese industrial and financial development in coming years, prospect of multilateral cooperation, development of knowledge-based economy and infrastructure in Vietnam.
Earlier, an exhibition of Vietnam’s most popular trade names opened on the sidelines of the conference.
Experts said the first international conference on Vietnam’s external economy, which took place early last year had been successful in strengthening business circles and foreign investors confidence in the country’s business environment, helping draw in a record amount of foreign investment in 2008.
