Falling laptop prices energise market

The laptop market in HCM City has never before seen so many high quality products at such low prices, says one leading IT product dealer.

Ngo Quang Vinh, marketing director of Ideas Home Appliance Centre, said that last year the Government had increased VAT from five to 10 per cent on electronic products, making it difficult for distributors to sell laptops because of the increase in prices.

However, since February this year, the VAT has been reduced to five per cent, so distributors have reduced the price of all kinds of laptops to sell out the goods in stock and quickly launch new products.

At the digital equipment centre, of famous brand laptops like Sony, HP and Acer are being sold at "soft" prices that are a dream for many customers.

For example, the price of Sony's NR240 which has a sale price of US$725 per unit last year, now is selling at $679 per unit.

HP's DV65000T is selling at $1,248 per unit, a decrease of $150 over last year.

Dell, a popular high quality product, has attracted many Vietnamese customers with its Inspiron 1318 Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 is now selling for $929.

The CMC Computer Company is now launching a promotion with prizes worth over VND2 billion (US$117,647) in total. Those who purchase the Acer Extensa laptop will have an opportunity to win a Sony Ericsson J132 or R300 cell phone.

Laptops at these prices are proving a hit with consumers. HP, Acer, Dell, Gateway and eMachine have co-organised a laptop festival at the Ideas Electronics Centre in District 3 that is ongoing.

The Mobile World Supermarket Chain is also offering a discount of 15-20 per cent to attract consumers. For example, the price of HP 6535 has decreased from VND10 million ($588) to VND8.9 million ($523.5) and the price of HP 6530 is now VND11 million ($647), down from VND13 million ($764).

Acer and Lenovo laptops are on offer at VND10.9 million ($641) and VND13.7 million ($805.8) respectively.

Experts predict that the laptop market will see a decrease of 10-15 per cent in price from now until the end of this year.
