Supermarts boosting sales, traditional markets remain gloomy

Supermarts’ promotion programs have brought the desired effects with the sales having been improved significantly. Meanwhile, traditional markets cannot lure customers as they lack promotion programs.

Low price the key

After the successful promotion program launched on Women’s Day March 8, Big C, Co-op Mart and Maximark are planning many other programs to lure more customers.

Nguyen Thi Le, a housewife in Tan Binh district in HCM City, related that she initially intended to purchase some products only for family use. However, she decided to purchase a lot of things because she found the products very cheap. “I wish promotion programs can be launched every day, which will help consumers ease their financial difficulties,” Le said.

Duong Thi Quynh Trang, Public Relations Director of Big C, said that with the program ‘The Cheapest Prices Ever,’ the number of buyers has increased significantly. More and more consumers have come though the promotion program had finished. “Therefore, we plan to launch another promotion program, under which consumers will get one product free if they purchase two products of the same type.”

However, Trang said that in order to get the low prices, supermarts have to apply a specific strategy on pricing. Once both the supermarts and suppliers offer price decreases, the commodities will have good sale prices.

Pham Van Minh, Director of Phu An Sinh Company Ltd., said that in the last while, the sales of the company have not been influenced much as consumers still have to spend money on essential foodstuff products. “However, we will push up sale promotion programs in order to raise turnover and stimulate demand,” Minh said.

He went on to say that from March 25 to April 25, the 5% discount will be applied to all buyers at Phu An Sinh retail chain.

Traditional markets gloomy because of no discounts

Retail shops, traditional markets, and sale agents still complain that sales have been going slowly as they do not have any promotion programs.

Petty merchants at Ba Chieu, Pham Van Hai, and Ben Thanh markets complain that the sales remain very weak.

Dinh Thai, the owner of the retail shop on Su Van Hanh Street in district 10, said that all the items prove to be unsellable. He said that the distribution policy applied by supplies to sales agents proves to be different from that applied to supermarts. Therefore, despite the decreasing number of clients, small sales agents are not capable to launch promotion programs like those launched at supermarts.

Van Duc Muoi, Deputy General Director of Vissan, the meat producer and supplier, said that in principle, enterprises should think of a price reduction program applied to the whole system. This will allow all customers, no matter they purchase products at supermarts or traditional markets, to benefit.
